Overcoming Barriers to Seeking Counselling: Why NDIS Funding Isn’t Always Enough

Updated: Nov 3, 2024

While having NDIS funding for counselling can open doors to support, many individuals still find it challenging to seek help. This blog will explore the barriers that may prevent someone from accessing counselling services, even when funding is available. By addressing these challenges, we can encourage those in need to take the crucial step towards mental wellness.

Reasons It Can Be Hard to Seek Counselling

  1. Stigma and Misunderstanding: Many individuals, especially those who are neurodivergent, may face stigma associated with mental health and counselling. They might worry about being judged or misunderstood by a clinician who doesn't share their experiences or perspective. This can create an internal conflict that prevents them from reaching out for help.

  2. Fear of the Unknown: The thought of opening up to a stranger can be daunting. Individuals might fear that they won’t be understood or that the therapeutic process will be uncomfortable. Concerns about confidentiality and the effectiveness of counselling can also deter individuals from seeking support, even when funding is available.

  3. Logistical Challenges: Even with funding, practical barriers such as finding a suitable therapist, scheduling conflicts, or transportation issues can complicate the process. For neurodivergent individuals, the sensory environment of some counselling settings may also be overwhelming, further discouraging them from pursuing help.

Why You’ll Feel Safe with Me

As a neurodivergent counsellor myself, I understand these barriers intimately. I recognise the unique challenges faced by individuals who are autistic or have ADHD, and I create a space where you can feel truly understood and accepted. My practice is built on a foundation of neuro-affirming principles, ensuring that you won't have to mask or hide your true self during our sessions. You will find that our conversations can be honest and open, without the fear of judgement.

I prioritise creating a safe, comfortable environment tailored to your needs. Whether we meet in person, online, or over the phone, my goal is to ensure that you feel at ease discussing your thoughts and feelings. With my background in education and behaviour support, I bring empathy and understanding to our sessions, making it easier for you to embark on your journey toward mental wellness. Together, we can work towards achieving your goals, one step at a time… and at your pace.

Conclusion

Seeking counselling can be a significant step toward healing, but it's not always easy, even with NDIS funding in place. By understanding the barriers that may exist and recognising the importance of feeling safe and understood, individuals can take that brave step towards accessing the support they deserve. Remember, you are not alone on this journey; I’m here to help guide and support you every step of the way.
